A man in Rogers, Arkansas, is causing some rubbernecking in his neighborhood, thanks to his unusual holiday display. David Wheeler is using the Christmas spirit to display his political opinions. His front yard prominently features a blow-up Santa peeing on the word, ‘Obama,’ which is spelled out in decorative lights.
Wheeler told KHBS he was “just trying to be funny” and that he would remove the display if anyone was truly offended by it.
His neighbors are divided by the display. One man said: “It's his protest, and I'm all for it … it is important that you are able to express [that in a] meaningful way [and] not trash [President Obama] too much, even though he probably deserves it.”
Another neighbor said that, while Wheeler absolutely had the right to create this Christmas display, he still found it disrespectful.
“The President of the United States, no matter who he is, is a time-honored position, and we need to support that."
The American Civil Liberties Union has previously made the case that Christmas lights are protected under the first amendment, meaning there is nothing legally wrong with Wheeler’s display.
Two years ago, the ACLU supported a woman whose christmas lights display featured a middle finger. A judge banned police from forcing the woman to remove her Christmas lights, and Margorie Esman, executive director for the ACLU of Louisiana, called the move a “victory for the First Amendment and the rule of law.”
