White supremacist David Duke criticized New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio for wearing a Jewish shawl and carrying a Torah in a photo.
“The mayor of NYC, Bill de Blasio (born Warren Wilhelm Jr.), is one disrespectful/hateful man - Sure hope Trump puts him in his place,” Duke tweeted Nov. 18, adding the hashtag #MAGA that stands for President-elect Donald Trump's “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan.
The Forward reported that Duke put de Blasio's birth name in parentheses to imply an insult.
“How hateful and disrespectful, Duke implies, that someone with a Germanic-sounding name would proudly carry a Torah scroll,” The Forward wrote.
De Blasio's father committed suicide in 1979 and the mayor later took his mother's last name to honor her, according to The Forward.
Duke is a former KKK grand wizard and sometimes political candidate who most recently ran for the Republican nomination for Senator of Louisiana.
“If you're being criticized by devout racist David Duke, you're probably doing something right,” de Blasio's spokesman said, according to the New York Daily News.
“There’s a lot about NYC that the KKK probably hates,” De Blasio responded in a statement from spokeswoman Jessica Ramos, according to The Forward. “Of our many diverse communities, Mr. Duke chose our relationship with the Jewish community to single out,” she wrote in her emailed response. “We should take a minute to be proud of that fact. And after this minute, we go back to work.”
