A police officer was caught on video (below) apparently hitting and killing a pedestrian while speeding.

In the video, Wheeling Police Officer Preston Robertson is seen stopped at a traffic light. Once the light turns green, Robertson begins to drive and then makes a U-turn after a driver passes by. Robertson then begins to drive faster before speeding up significantly.

About a minute into the video, Robertson appears to be speeding through lights and weaving through the occasional moment of light traffic to get by. Suddenly, a pedestrian is seen colliding with the officer’s vehicle. Robertson stops, gets out of the car and can be heard.

According to clip of the Sept. 14, 2014, incident, posted to LiveLeak, Robertson — who’d been driving without emergency lights or a siren and failed to call in the chase that preceded the collision — was suspended for two months with pay and ultimately allowed back on the force.

The victim was identified as 20-year-old Fredi Morales. Morales’ family recently filed a lawsuit against the village of Wheeling as well as Robertson. The suit claims negligence on the part of officer Robertson, and seeks $50,000 in damages.
