An assistant principal at a middle school in South Carolina was charged on Friday with three counts of sexual exploitation of a child after investigators found child pornography on his computer.
Darin Pearson, 32, was arrested by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police after the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force notified them that Pearson was sharing the images.
After they were alerted, they searched his home and seized electronic devices where they found evidence of child pornography.
On Friday, he was out of jail after he posted bond, but is expected to appear in court on Monday in Charlotte, North Carolina.
He is on paid administrative leave from his position as assistant principal at Sullivan Middle School in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
Pearson was a respected teacher and administrator. He taught from 2002 to 2007 and was named “teacher of the year” in 2007 before he was given the position of assistant principal.
Officials at the school have not said whether Pearson is suspected of assaulting students, but are shocked to learn of his charges.
“Had no clue,” district spokesperson Elaine Baker said. “No nothing, thought he was a great guy.”
“We don’t expect it involves any student at Sullivan. And we hope it does not.”
Parents and students were told of the arrest on Friday.
