Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas accused GOP front-runner Donald Trump of taking advantage of low IQ voters.
Cruz made the comment in an interview with CBN's "The Brody File," which was conducted while Cruz was campaigning in Miami, Florida.
Cruz said of Trump:
"Donald has done well in the southeastern states. He has had a good base of support. We’ve done well as well, we’ve been typically second in each of those states, and we’ve racked up delegates. Now Donald has a harder problem in the West, it’s interesting, his location he does well in the southeast. He does well with a certain demographic of voter. Donald gave a press conference where he said, to quote him, ‘I love the poorly educated.’
"Listen, part of it is I think Donald is taking advantage of his voters because I understand what they’re angry about, but Donald if you’re angry at the corruption of Washington, you don’t solve it by supporting someone who has been enmeshed in the Washington corruption for 40 years."
Cruz went on to say that Trump has been a longtime supporter of liberal politicians like former President Jimmy Carter, Secretary of State John Kerry and Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York. He then offered an assessment of the kind of voters who have supported Trump's bid for president.
"Listen, Donald does well with voters who have relatively low information, who are not that engaged and who are angry and they see him as an angry voice. Where we are beating him is when voters’ get more engaged and they get more informed. When they inform themselves, they realize his record. He’s what they’re angry at. He is the corruption, and if you want someone to stand up to Washington, the only one who has been doing so in this race is me.”
Cruz has been trailing behind Trump throughout the race so far, and remains second as the GOP field becomes smaller. Former candidate businesswoman Carly Fiorina recently endorsed Cruz and slammed Trump at a rally in Miami.
"There are people in our party who are actually kind of horrified by Donald Trump. I'm one of them," she said. "We're going to have to beat Donald Trump at the ballot box. And the only guy who can beat Donald Trump is Ted Cruz."
"There are some people in our party saying Donald Trump isn't so bad ... but he's a deal maker; he can make deals. The truth is Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are two sides of the same coin. They're not going to reform the system, they are the system," Fiorina added.
