Police in South Africa were called to disperse a crowd outside a couple's apartment after a man became stuck inside his married lover while the two were having sex. The crowd had reportedly gathered after rumors spread that the woman's husband put a "black magic spell" on her private parts.

The bizarre situation was a case of something called penis captivus, in which the woman’s vagina contracts too much and traps the man’s penis, according to the Daily Mail.

Sasha Ngema, 34, and her boyfriend, 22-year-old Sol Qoboza, tried to stop a rumor from spreading that Sasha’s husband had cast a spell on her vagina. But a crowd had already formed outside their Johannesburg apartment before they were able to do so.

According to the rumors, Sasha’s husband, 42-year-old Neill, went to a witch doctor after he became suspicious of his wife and asked him to put a spell, known as a muthi, on her.

Neighbors told reporters they heard screaming coming from the couple’s apartment.

“At first I thought it was just the screams of sexual pleasure, but it turned out to be screams for help,” neighbor Priscilla Ndlovu said, reports the Mirror. “I knocked on the door to see if everything was OK, and when I went in I saw him lying on top of her sobbing as she screamed to be freed.”

When police arrived, nearly 2,000 people had gathered outside of the apartment building. A spokesman for the Johannesburg police said they resorted to using pepper spray to break the crowd up.

“Everyone was curious to see what was happening because although you always hear about such things you never see it,” bystander Janet Pieterse said. “The police's reaction was completely over the top.”

The couple was taken to a local hospital, because Qoboza remained stuck inside Sasha.

According to local magic expert Sangoma Mathabo Mofokeng, separation under the alleged spell is not as easy as medical intervention.

“No one will be able to separate them until the woman's husband comes back,” Mofokeng said.
