A Michigan couple who admitted to videotaping themselves raping a 1-year-old girl in 2012 was sentenced to life in prison.
Stevie Foehl, 28, and 26-year-old Michael Emory appeared in court on Thursday afternoon to learn their fate after admitting to the horrendous crime. Both Emory and Foehl expressed remorse for what they did before the judge handed down their sentences.
“To say I’m remorseful is an understatement,” Foehl said in a prepared statement. “If I could go back and change my actions I would.”
Emory’s lawyer argued his client’s potential candidacy for rehabilitation – a suggestion that Judge Dennis Lieber rejected.
“I’d just like to apologize to the family of the victim,” Emory said in court. “Every day I wake up and wish I could take this back, all I can try to do is make the future better, make things better somehow.”
Lieber asked Emory how he could have possibly found himself in a situation where he would sexually abuse an infant, to which the young man responded that the incident was the result of a “long line of bad choices” and was “a hard situation to explain.”
The sentencing came after both individuals pleaded guilty to various charges. Emory pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, using a computer to commit a crime and possession of child sexual material. Foehl pleaded to one count of each of the same three charges. Emory will serve three consecutive life sentences.
“Criminal sexual conduct in the first degree is one of the more serious crimes,” Judge Lieber said in court. “I don’t know how to quantify the horror this child was put through.”
