A Florida couple reportedly attempted to use a U-Haul truck to steal items from an empty residence, according to police.
The crime was reported around 2:45 p.m. on Jan. 21. Donald and Jennifer Herst had come home from running errands when they found the U-Haul parked in their driveway with the garage door open.
When Amanda Kay Roberts and Jack Ronald Hayes, the suspects, saw the homeowners return, they attempted to flee in the truck.
Herst noted that Roberts was driving when she intentionally backed the truck into Herst’s vehicle. Roberts then drove into the Hersts’ back yard and damaged the vinyl fencing.
The Hersts followed the U-Haul until it eventually crashed into a tree. Roberts and Hayes then jumped out of the truck and ran into the woods, although Roberts briefly returned to the car to grab her purse out of the driver’s seat.
The suspects were later found hiding in brush in the woods.
The suspects were taken to Leesburg Regional Medical Center for treatment related to the crash. They were later arrested and charged with burglary, grand theft, aggravated battery and criminal mischief.
The two are currently being held at Lake County Jail on $17,000 bond.
