A couple from Owasso, Oklahoma, were arrested on child abuse charges in what a doctor and multiple nurses are referring to as "the worst case of child abuse they had seen."
Kevin Fowler, 25, and Aislyn Miller, 24, were taken into custody Dec. 10 after police were dispatched to an urgent care center to investigate a child abuse call, Tulsa World reports.
The victims of the alleged abuse were the couple's twin infants. Both children reportedly looked like skeletons and had bed sores and severe diaper rash.
The infants were taken to a hospital for treatment.
A nurse told officers that a maggot crawled out of one of the victim’s genitals, KJRH reports.
The other infant had feces in its ears, the nurse said.
There was also an infected wound on one of the babies, caused by a piece of hair getting wrapped around her finger and it never being removed, according to Tulsa World.
An Owasso police sergeant said, given the state of the infants, it is the worst child abuse he has ever seen. Nurses and the infants' doctor agreed.
Miller reportedly told police that she knew the babies had issues, but that she and Fowler are “new parents” and don’t have experience caring for children. She added that the babies were born two weeks premature and that is why they were in such a condition.
Miller also said that she does not have health insurance and does not know how to find affordable health care.
Both Fowler and Miller were arrested at the hospital. They face complaints of child abuse and are being held at Tulsa Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
