Parents in Raleigh, North Carolina, were charged with felony child abuse after their beaten son was found in a recycle bin.
Melissa White said she came outside to put something in the trash, and discovered a boy inside when she opened the bin. The 9-year-old boy was wet, injured and hungry, reports ABC 11.
“He was scared half to death. He was like, 'Please don't let them take me back,'" White said. The boy reportedly told White he was “hiding,” and that he didn’t know where he lived. She quickly brought the boy inside, fed him and called 911.
“It was like dried up blood all around his nose and then like over here — on the side of his head — he had like lumps and a cut right here from where he was getting hit in the head,” she said of his condition.
The boy’s parents, his stepfather, 25-year-old Leroy Blake and his mother, 29-year-old Jillian Randel Davis, were later arrested and charged with child abuse causing serious physical injury. The couple, the boy and his 2-month-old brother had been sleeping in a nearby park, reports WNCN.
“That's what they deserve. They deserve that because there's no, there's no reason why you should treat your child like that let alone sleeping the park with your child,” White said of the parents’ arrest.
The boy was placed in protective custody and subsequently turned over to the NC Department of Health and Human Services.
“I hope that the children are safe and I hope that he is placed in a better home and, you know, he is able to live and enjoy life like a normal 10-year-old should,” White said.
