A Michigan couple with 12 sons is eagerly awaiting the arrival of their thirteenth child, though they admitted they’d be shocked if it was a girl.
Jay and Kateri Schwandt are expecting their new baby on May 9, and though they say they’d be shocked if it was a girl, they would happily welcome her into the family.
“If we were to have a girl, I think we would go into shock,” Mrs. Schwandt said. "It would probably be disbelief.”
Mr. Schwandt said he simply hopes for a healthy baby, but that it would be interesting to see the effect of having a girl in a household of 12 boys.
“I’ve experienced all the boy stuff,” Mr. Schwandt said. “As long as we are having all these children, it would be really neat to experience the other side.”
He added that there’s a lot of roughhousing and wrestling that goes on in the house, but he argued that it would be a little different if a baby girl were to arrive. Mrs. Schwandt said that while having a baby girl in the house would be interesting, having a boy would “take the pressure off," since both parents are experts in raising boys.
The couple never planned on having such a large family, but after they initially got pregnant in college, they decided to have another child so that their first son could have a sibling. After their second child, Mrs. Schwandt admitted that the “flood gates were kind of open."
The Schwandts consider themselves devout Roman Catholics and therefore don’t believe in using birth control. Mrs. Schwandt, who comes from a family of 14 children, said she thoroughly enjoys being pregnant.
