Former Las Vegas police Officer Ruben Delgadillo has killed himself the day before he was scheduled to be sentenced for possessing child pornography.

On July 24, Delgadillo was found dead in his bedroom by suspected asphyxiation, though the Clark County Coroner's Office is still running tests to determine exactly how the 25-year-old died, according to KVVU. A full autopsy should be completed within several weeks.

Though he was out on bail when he died, Delgadillo was arrested in August 2016 for possessing what Nevada officials said was one the largest stashes of child pornography ever seen in the state.

"I remember seeing his face on TV," said retired Metro Police Captain Daniel Barry, according to KVVU. "Wow. That's crazy. I wish people would reach out for help and be strong. That's being strong, reaching out for help ... I just feel bad for his family left behind now having to deal with this."

When he was taken into police custody, Delgadillo reportedly said that he always felt guilty and knew that he had a problem, even comparing himself to sex offenders and child molesters.

Prospective police applicants undergo extensive background checks, including psychological tests, to determine if they are fit for the job, though Barry noted that the process is a different one than he saw when he was coming up.

"Back in 1980, they actually sent people back to your home town," Barry explained. "Any time you're dealing with the human race you're going to get people who slide through the cracks, and I think that's probably what happened here."

Delgadillo started working with the police force in July 2015 and was suspended immediately after officers tracked him down and arrested him based on the peer-to-peer software that he used to send and receive child sex media.

He had been sharing files via an Ares Network that had massive amounts of child porn, notes KSNV. Members of the Nevada Internet Crimes against Children Task Force (ICAC) found a number of files associated with his IP address, which he had changed earlier that month. With the assistance of Cox Communications, officers determined that both addresses belonged to Delgadillo.

Upon his arrest, they searched his home and found more than two dozen child porn files on his devices.

He was charged with five counts of unlawful visual presentation depicting sexual conduct of a person under 16 and one count of distribution of pornography involving a minor -- all of which could have landed him in prison for up to 45 years, notes KVVU. He eventually entered a guilty plea.
