Conservative Media Kill Plan to Shelter Immigrant Children (Video)

BCFS Health and Human Services, a charity, was recently awarded a federal contract to buy the Palm Aire Hotel and Suites hotel in Weslaco, Tx., and transform it into dormitory-style facility for undocumented immigrant children between the ages of 12 and 17.

Krista Piferrer, a spokesperson with BCFS, told KRGV that there would also be a medical staff at the renovated facility to treat the immigrant children for diseases or injuries.

While that might sound like a good idea to most people, it was trashed by conservative media outlets, which tried to portray the children living in a glamorous hotel.

According to, Fox News host Gretchen Carlson reported this week that the undocumented children would be "living the American dream on the taxpayer's dime" (video below).

Fox News religion reporter Todd Starnes noted on that "the multi-million-dollar hotel complex" had a "7-acre site features three swimming pools, lighted tennis courts, concierge service and a Jacuzzi." reports that Starnes' article has since been significantly changed and updated.

Starnes also tweeted: "Feds to house illegals at hotel - with poolside cabanas and concierge service."

The conservative Drudge Report linked to a story on the right wing Gateway Pundit, which posted numerous present pictures of luxurious hotel and called the facility a "resort hotel for illegal alien children."

KRGV reported on July 16 that BCFS had canceled its plans to renovate the hotel due to "negative backlash caused by information misreported to the public."

Of course, the undocumented children will still have to be housed somewhere on the taxpayer's dime.
