According to the New York Post, two Con Ed workers confronted Ismaaiyl Brinsley right after he ambushed and murdered two NYPD officers on Saturday, Dec. 20.
The workers reportedly witnessed Brinsley’s brutal killing of officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu and proceeded to follow the 28-year-old in their truck as he attempted to flee the scene. When they confronted Brinsley in the street, he pointed his silver semi-automatic weapon at them and shouted, “You want some of this?”
The workers then backed off, and Brinsley made his way into the G-train station. The pair alerted authorities to his whereabouts and described his appearance, leading officers to the subway where the killer was waiting for a train.
“That’s how the cops knew he was in there,” a source told the New York Post.
It was then that Brinsley turned the gun on himself and took his own life.
Officers told the New York Post that if it hadn’t been for the Con Ed workers pursuing and confronting Ismaaiyl Brinsley, he would have likely gotten away and authorities may not have been able to locate him as easily as they did.
Brinsley gunned down the officers shortly before 3 p.m. on Saturday in an attempt to avenge the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown. An Instagram photo posted by Brinsley shortly before the killing revealed his plan to murder NYPD officers, with the caption reading in part, “I’m Putting Wings On Pigs Today.”
Officer Liu, a newlywed of two months, had seven years with the department. Ramos, a father of two, had two years on the job.
The murder of Ramos and Liu comes after weeks of tension following grand jury decisions in the cases of Garner and Brown. The killing occurred at almost the same time that police in Baltimore, where Brinsley had an address, were alerting the NYPD that he may be headed to Brooklyn. Tragically, the fax they sent to New York reportedly arrived at 2:45 p.m., just five minutes before the shooting occurred.
Ismaaiyl Brinsley had a criminal record that dated back to 2006 and included a number of arrests in various states.
