Colin Powell Denies Affair With Romanian Diplomat After Hacker Publishes Intimate Emails

A former Secretary of State has admitted to exchanging intimate emails with a Romanian diplomat that he met while he was working. Colin Powell, 76, said that Corina Cretu, 45, confessed to loving him but he denies that the two ever had an affair. Powell was forced to address the situation after a hacker posted details from their private messages.

“When I was the Secretary of State and she was an assistant to the President of Romania, we occasionally attended the same diplomatic and international meetings,” Powell wrote in a statement addressing the issue. He said that the two stayed in contact after he left the State Department in 2005 and noted that he frequently gave Cretu “advice on the prospects of finding a position with the United Nations or other international organizations.”

“Over time the emails became of a very personal nature, but did not result in an affair," Powell said. "Those type of emails ended a few years ago. There was no affair then and there is not one now.”

In a message from 2011, Cretu wrote: “I have loved you too much, too many years. YOU were my greatest love of my life.” She also sent him revealing pictures including one in a hot tub and a bikini shot.

Powell was questioned about the photos that were included in some of the emails.

“She sent photos on a regular basis,” he said. “Lots of family photos with her nieces, who she adores, family reunions, formal business sessions, her wedding and some bathing suit photos ... Never anything improper.”

Powell has been married for 50 years and Cretu was married last year, The Daily Mail reported.

He concluded his written statement by saying, “I am pleased that she is having a successful career. I am pleased that she is recently and happily married.”
