A group of customers left a note for their 20-year-old server in Overland Park, Kan., explaining why they did not tip him after they ate at Carrabba’s Italian Grill, despite his “excellent” service.
“Thank you for your service, it was excellent,” the note said. “That being said, we cannot in good conscience tip you, for your homosexual lifestyle is an affront to GOD [sic]. Queers do not share in the wealth of GOD, and you will not share in ours.”
“We hope you will see the tip your queer choices made you lose out on, and plan accordingly,” it said. “It is never too late for GOD’s love, but none shall be spared for queers. May GOD have mercy on you.”
The waiter declined to provide his name to local news and asked explicitly that people not give him money to make up for the hateful note.
“The offers to help pay me back are much appreciated, but not at all needed,” he said in a statement. “I’d prefer to let my work ethic and my service do the talking, nothing else.”
After KCTV broadcast the server’s story, a group of supporters now plans to eat at Carrabba’s on Friday to show their support for his “gay lifestyle.”
“I think it’s so unfortunate that we would impress upon other people our beliefs,” said Susan Fehlig told KMBC.
“It’s honestly despicable. It’s not different than saying I’m not tipping you because you’re black, or a Jew, or anything like that,” said Will Rogers. “In this day and age, being gay, it’s not really any cause for a fuss.”
