A man convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl was killed after he and his girlfriend were struck by a van while walking on a country road in Wales.
Ryan Draper, 27, and his girlfriend were hit by a van while walking on a quiet road in Caerwys, Wales. Draper was pronounced dead at the scene and his girlfriend was rushed to the hospital. Doctors described her condition as "life changing."
The driver of the van was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries as well. He was arrested following the accident on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, but was released on bail.
In 2011, Ryan Draper was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to raping a 12-year-old girl, the Daily Mail reports. He was placed on the sex offender registry for the rest of his life and was given a Sexual Offenses Prevention Order which says he cannot contact or approach the victim.
"You gratified yourself, you used no protection and showed a total disregard for her," Judge Niclas Parry told Draper in court.
Draper's parents released a statement following their son's death.
"Both Hilary and David Draper, and his brother Joshua are deeply saddened at the loss of our loving son Ryan who was tragically and suddenly taken from us," the parents' statement reads. "We loved him so much and he will always be in our hearts. God bless him and we pray that his girlfriend makes a full recovery."
Sergeant Tony Gatley from the North Wales Police called for witnesses of the accident to come forward.
"I am appealing for anybody who may have been traveling in the area at round the time of the collision, or to anybody who may have seen two people walking along the B5122 to come forward," Gatley requested. "Officers from the Collision Investigation Unit were called to the scene and the road was closed [while] the initial investigation took place."
