A retired bus driver in the U.K. was sentenced to 25 years in prison for sexually abusing a young girl more than 400 times and assaulting another during a EuroDisney trip.
Robert Newsham, 78, was the driver on a trip to Disneyland Paris in 1998 and assaulted an 11-year-old girl at a hotel, BBC reported. According to Mirror Online, the girl was forced to share a bed and to shower with Newsham.
Newsham admitted to sexually assaulting another young girl hundreds of times over the course of what he described as a “long-running affair.” The abuse started when the girl was 9 and lasted until she was 14, according to BBC.
It was revealed in court that Newsham’s history of sexual abuse stretched back to the 1950s and '60s. It was also discovered that he had hundreds of indecent images of young girls on his computer.
During a two-day trial, Newsham reportedly responded to the charges against him without remorse – even saying that he believed 13 was the age of consent for sex.
“Your attitude to sexual offending is completely remarkable,” Judge Phillip Wassall said in court. “This type of abuse changes the lives of the children and the way they think and act when they become adults. It changes the way they interact with other people.
“You tried to portray your abuse of one of the girls as some sort of loving relationship and described it as a natural flow. It was a most remarkable piece of evidence and very disturbing. You could not see that it was sinister grooming of a vulnerable girl. You have no recognition that you are wrong.
“You are a dangerous offender who presents a serious risk to the public. You have no insight and are not capable of taking part in any intervention to challenging your attitudes and beliefs."
The jury at Exeter Crown Court found Newsham guily within one hour. He will not be eligible for release on licence until he is 90.
