PHILADELPHIA - Franklin Manuel Santana had warned Tyrik Harris a number of times not to let his dog defecate in his yard in the 6500 block of Torresdale Avenue in Tacony, according to CBS Philadelphia.
On Tuesday , February 14, about 4:00 p.m., Harris, 27, was walking his Chihuahua off leash when Santana, 47, warned again about the dog poop. According to reports, the two men argued and the dispute escalated to a physical struggle.
That was when the dog owner, Harris, pulled out a gun and shot Santana, the father of two, at least three times in the head and neck. Santana leaves a six-week-old baby girl, Roxxanne, and a 14-year-old daughter, Melissa, as well as his wife, Raquel. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey called it a “senseless tragedy.” Harris' dog was a Chihuahua. Neighbors reported that the dog-waste issue had caused conflict between the men before but they never dreamed it would end in one man’s death.
Santana’s wife told reporters that the family had moved from Miami to Philadelphia just one month ago so Santana would have better job opportunities in construction and home remodeling. Neighbors told officers that Tyrik Harris had been a school district police officer but recently lost his job.
He still regularly carried a handgun in a holster. Police records show that Harris’ license to carry a gun had been revoked in January, Harris remains in custody on charges of murder and related offenses, according to CBS Philadelphia.
