A far South Side Chicago woman was arrested after being accused of running a dog-fighting ring in her home and starving two pit bull puppies to death.
According to reports, 24-year-old Shantell Burnett was caught hiding the two dead puppies in a closet after her sister called in a domestic disturbance around 3 p.m.
When police arrived at Burnett’s home, they reportedly noticed a foul smell and subsequently asked the woman if she had any animals in the house. Burnett then led the officers to a closet door, and she opened it to reveal two dead pit bulls covered in urine and feces, reported Fox 32 Chicago. According to the officers, the dogs appeared to have died from having no access to food, water or light.
Burnett’s sister informed police there were more dogs in the basement of the house, and that Burnett had been using them for dog fighting. The officers subsequently discovered two more dogs in the basement, covered in feces and surrounded by trash. Both appeared to be extremely malnourished. Burnett’s sister explained the woman had starved the dogs and thrown them in the trash. Animal Control later intervened and took three pit bulls and one puppy into custody, reports ABC 7 Chicago.
Burnett was arrested and charged with four felony counts of aggravated cruelty to animals. She was later released and is currently on electronic monitoring while awaiting trial.
