Chelsea Clinton has been drawn into the controversy regarding the emails hacked from the email account of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta.
Since October, WikiLeaks has released over 50,000 of the emails, which are published on WikiLeaks.org. Podesta, a close political ally of the Clintons, had previously served as Chief of Staff for President Bill Clinton.
The emails in question indicate that Chelsea used funds from the Clinton Foundation for her wedding, living expenses and taxes on gifts of cash from her parents, reports the New York Post.
In a Jan. 4, 2012 email, a former top aide to Bill, Doug Band, wrote: “The investigation into her getting paid for campaigning, using foundation resources for her wedding and life for a decade, taxes on money from her parents. ... I hope that you will speak to her and end this.”
In related correspondence with Podesta, Band referred to Chelsea as a “spoiled brat kid,” and mentioned that she had spoken to one of George W. Bush’s daughters regarding transfers of money from the Clinton Global Initiative to the Clinton Foundation. “The Bush kid then told someone else who told an operative within the Republican party,” he wrote.
Band also referred to Chelsea “talking about lots of what is going on internally to people,” which he said is “not smart.” Podesta agreed, adding the sarcastic remark, “You are perfecting your skills for understatement.”
As Vice Chair of the Clinton Foundation, Chelsea “works to drive the vision and programmatic work of the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation,” according to the official website.
The mission and accomplishments of the Foundation are also summarized on the website:
Over the past 15 years, the Clinton Foundation has convened businesses, governments, NGOs, and individuals to improve global health and wellness, increase opportunity for girls and women, reduce childhood obesity, create economic opportunity and growth, and help communities address the effects of climate change.
