Chaz Bono is taking the final step to becoming a man, asking the state of California for official recognition. Bono filed a petition last week to change his name and gender.

Chaz was born Chastity Bono to parents Sonny and Cher 41 years ago. But last year he had a sex change operation, calling it "the best decision I've ever made."

According to TMZ.com, the filing includes a declaration from Bono's doctor indicating he performed a gender-change operation last year.

A hearing on the petition is scheduled for May 6 in Santa Monica.
