Charles Manson is about to become a newlywed. The 80-year-old mass murderer has been granted a marriage license and is set to say “I do” to 26-year-old Afton Elaine Burton, who has been faithfully trying to exonerate her future husband since she was a teenager.
Burton, who goes by the nickname “Star,” used her life savings to move from her home in Illinois nine years ago so she could be closer to Manson, who has been in a Corcoran, California, prison since the 1970s, reports Time magazine. The young woman reportedly became interested in Manson when she was just 17, after a friend showed her articles he wrote about the environment. She has since created a fan site for Manson, where she posts his songs, facts about his case, and information for anyone who wants to help free him.
Manson is serving a life sentence for killing seven people – including pregnant actress Sharon Tate – in 1969. He has been denied parole 12 times, reports BBC News, and will not be entitled to have conjugal visits with Burton after they get married.
Burton insists that her desire to marry the convicted killer is a pure one.
“Y’all can know that it’s true…It’s going to happen,” Burton told AP. “I love him. I’m with him. There’s all kinds of things.”
Burton has also admitted that she is working on helping to free Manson and that her status as his wife will make that easier – though she failed to elaborate, reports the Daily Mail.
Tate’s sister Debra, who is the victims’ spokesperson, called the marriage “ludicrous.”
The couple will reportedly marry early next month at the jail. They are allowed to invite up to 10 non-inmate guests.
