Only 40 percent of Americans approve of President Donald Trump's job performance so far, according to a new poll.

The CBS News network said that's the lowest approval rating for a new president since 1953, around the time Gallup first began asking people that question.

The poll also said that 51 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump’s executive order that temporarily bans people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S., while 45 percent approve.

Those numbers counter a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll that found 49 percent of Americans agreed with the ban, while 41 percent disagreed.

The CBS News poll sates that more Americans are divided on whether they are less safe because of the Muslim-majority country ban: 36 percent said that they are safer, but 36 percent also said they are less safer. And 22 percent said it would have no effect.

In the recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, 31 percent of people said the ban made tem feel "more safe," while 26 percent said the ban made them feel "less safe." And 33 percent said they didn't know or it would make no difference.

The CBS News poll also asked people about their views on Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch -- but the majority of people simply don't have an opinion yet.

And 56 percent of people said they "can't say" whether Gorsuch is a good addition to the Supreme Court.

But of those who had an opinion, most approved of Gorsuch: 27 percent said Gorsuch should be confirmed, while 14 percent said he shouldn't.
