A former Catholic school teacher will serve between six and 15 years in prison for having sex with a 15-year-old student.
Kathryn Ronk, 30, was a Spanish teacher at Bishop Foley Catholic High School in suburban Detroit. She was ordered to serve up to 15 years in prison on Thursday when she pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal sexual conduct for committing sexual acts with an underage student in her classroom, her car, and the student’s home.
According to police, the teacher and student would have sex in her classroom in between classes.
When the student’s parents filed a complaint last spring, it became known that Ronk could potentially face life in prison for her crimes, but now she will be eligible for parole after just five and a half years.
The sentence she received on Thursday was in Macomb County, where the student lives. Ronk also received a similar sentence from Oakland County, where the school is located, in March. She will serve the two sentences simultaneously.
At the sentencing, Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Mary Chrzanowski told Ronk, 'Teaching is such an honorable profession. What a terrible lesson, because you had a great job.'
The judge also told Ronk that she should teach those in prison “right from wrong.”
After the allegations, Ronk was immediately fired from the school.
