Carmageddon Begins -- 1 Day Earlier than Expected
The beast is here. And it's early.
Los Angeles residents -- and those passing through the City of Angels this weekend -- have been warned in advance about the pending closure of the 405.
Known as Carmageddon, the 405 freeway is shutting down from the 10 in the south to the 101 in the north.
What residents haven't been told is that major pieces of the project are actually starting Thursday evening -- not late Friday night.
Anybody up for some road rage?
In fact, highway access is being denied and massive street closures are happening much earlier than 12 a.m. Saturday -- the time Los Angeles residents were told everything would begin. In the last week, however, that time was bumped up when people were told on ramps would begin closing at 7 p.m. Friday.
Now, in a surprising move sure to anger and inconvenience thousands, officials are telling people major thoroughfares, on ramps and key freeway connectors will be shut down Thursday night, a full 24 hours before everyone expected it. The plan is to then reopen for driving tomorrow and close back down.
Here are just a few of the oh-by-the-way updates -- copied at 3:30 p.m. Thursday -- from Caltrans and government officials from http://www.facebook.com/405project
