Canadian Family's Home Destroyed By Airbnb Renters (Video)

A family in Calgary, Canada, came home from a trip to find its house completely destroyed (video below) by guests who rented their home from home sharing website Airbnb.

Homeowner Star King said that she and her husband, Mark, gave the renters keys to their home on April 25 before they left to visit Mark’s parents in another part of the city.

Shortly after leaving their home in the care of the renters, King said she began receiving text messages from neighbors telling her that police officers had shown up at the house. Earlier, King was told, a “huge luxury party bus pulled up,” carrying 100 people. According to King, she and her husband pleaded with the renters to leave. They were reportedly too drunk to respond.

“Our hardwood floors are all popping because there are pools of liquor. There's glass shards, there's dent in our walls, toilets flooded and plugged with condoms,” King said. Police reportedly described the situation as a “drug-induced orgy.”

“They threw paint all over my works that I was going to sell for probably a couple thousand. Just totally disrespectful behavior,” King said. “We came and wished the home was burnt down to ashes. It would have felt way better.”

The rental website responded to the incident, issuing a statement and announcing that the family would be reimbursed for the damages via Airbnb’s Host Guarantee, an insurance program that covers up to $1 million “to eligible properties in the rare event of guest damages which are not resolved directly with the guest.”

“We have zero tolerance for this kind of behavior and our team is working quickly to make this right,” Airbnb spokesman Jakob Kerr said. “Over 35 million guests have stayed on Airbnb, and property damage is extremely rare."
