San Bernardino, California, mom Kimberly Torres was arrested after her 3-year-old daughter allegedly pointed a loaded handgun, which had been stolen from a sheriff’s deputy, at police detectives.
“You just don’t think of a 3-year-old holding a loaded firearm at you,” San Bernardino Police Department Lt. Rich Lawhead said. “It could have ended up actually shooting one of the officers that were there.”
Torres, 20, was arrested and charged with suspicion of child endangerment and possession of stolen property. Her child was removed from the home.
The weapon was one of two guns, a service belt, and other items stolen from an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy’s car on May 7. Later that same day, a suspect named Ramon Quintero, 25, was arrested with one of the guns. Quintero was driving a car registered to Torres, which led to the investigation of her home.
“Obviously it’s a jaw-dropper for something like that to happen,” Lawhead said. “This could have ended much differently.”
Torres was bailed out of jail on Wednesday morning.
