A California man said he found the body of his best friend underneath a staircase in his backyard.
When Andrew Ponti came home on Aug. 25, a neighbor reportedly told him something happened, but she wasn't sure exactly what it was.
When Ponti entered his home, he noticed his keys were missing and there was standing water on the floor of the kitchen, CBS Sacramento reported. His 110-pound pit bull was also gone.
In the backyard, he made a shocking discovery. The body of his best friend, 33-year-old Joel, was tucked underneath his back porch staircase.
"Saw my best friend crunched into a ball the size of a cubic meter," he told CBS Sacramento.
Ponti added that Joel was his best friend since he was 9 years old.
Police say it is too early to know what happened, but an autopsy was scheduled for Aug. 27.
Joel's death is currently being called suspicious. Ponti is convinced foul play was involved. Grass Valley Police are working with the FBI on the investigation.
Ponti's pit bull was found safe 10 blocks from his home.
