A 22-year-old man defended his family with a weapon when intruders invaded his central California home on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.
The man ultimately killed one of the intruders and seriously injured another. There were at least two additional suspects involved in the intrusion and police are still searching for those individuals.
According to Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux, the 22-year-old was asleep when he heard a group of people break down his door around 5:30 a.m. He immediately moved his three siblings — ages 8, 11 and 18 — to another room before retrieving his handgun and using it to exchange fire with the suspects. The house was located near Orosi, California.
According to the Fresno Bee, the man was also hit by multiple rounds. He was taken to the hospital, where he healed after treatment.
ABC 30 reports that investigators claim the incident was an attempted home invasion. Whether or not a relationship between the invaders and the house’s residents previously existed is still unclear.
It is also unclear whether or not any charges will be filed against either the 22-year-old or the intruders.
