A California high school teacher’s aide is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student.
Police arrested Brandy Wilborn, 38, at Claremont High School on Friday. Officials confronted her with evidence supporting the allegation of her inappropriate relationship with the student.
She had been working in the school's special education department at the time of the arrest, according to the Daily Mail.
“We will be taking the file to [Los Angeles] District Attorney’s Office for review today,” Claremont Police Lt. Mike Ciszek told the Daily Bulletin in a phone interview on Tuesday.
The high school’s principal Brett O’Connor released a statement to parents on Monday concerning the arrest.
“We take very seriously any allegation of inappropriate conduct by adults involving our students,” the statement read. “That is why we are saddened to report that on Friday May 8, the Claremont Police Department removed an instructional aide from Claremont High School and placed her under arrest for alleged sexual misconduct with a male teenage student from our school."
Law enforcement officials were first told of the alleged relationship several months ago. However, they were unable to pursue legal action as there had not been enough evidence.
“Last week, we received additional information that led us to the student,” Ciszek said.
Police arrested Wilborn after interviewing her, several witnesses, and the student in question, the Daily Bulletin reports.
Wilborn was later released on bond the night of her arrest.
Wilborn and the student's sexual relationship reportedly continued for several months.
“As far as we know, the alleged incidents occurred off campus outside of the regular school day,” O’Connor said in his statement.
His statement added that Wilborn was placed on unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of the case, and that she would not be returning to the school.
