A Florida woman has been arrested on battery charges after she allegedly crashed a wedding, poured a drink on a couple, punched a woman in the face and allegedly got in a brawl with bridesmaids in a bathroom.
Shelby McDowell, 20, told police she crashed the Oct. 22 wedding at a beach resort in Palm Coast to spy on her boyfriend, who she suspected of cheating on her, according to WKMG.
McDowell said her boyfriend, Darby Johns, was a guest at the wedding. Johns later told police McDowell was not his girlfriend.
McDowell said a friend told her that Johns was cheating on her with another woman, Crystal Munoz, who was also attending the wedding.
"I just wanted to find out what was going on, unnoticed, and leave," McDowell wrote in a statement to WPEC. "My intention was to SEE what was happening, and if I saw him betraying me, it would have been a way for me to know and understand that our relationship was over."
McDowell said her "emotions took over" when she saw Johns and Munoz dancing together and kissing.
Munoz told police that was when McDowell ran onto the dance floor, poured a drink over her and Johns and punched her in the face, according to WKMG.
After allegedly assaulting Munoz, McDowell said she ran to the bathroom to cry. According to her statement to WPEC, that was when four women from the bridal party started banging on the stall door:
I ignored them at first, because I was so disturbed, but one of the girls crawled under my stall door and demanded to know who I was and why I was there. I opened the stall door, tried to get around the girl on the ground, and I said, "I am here because Darby and Crystal were together, and Darby and I are in a relationship." They continued to shout at me and I tried to leave, but I was punched in the face, drug to the ground, and even strangled.
Employees from the resort hosting the wedding told police a different story. WKMG reports that when a resort manager came to break up the fight, McDowell was on top of Munoz, punching her in the face.
Johns told police he never kissed Munoz and the pair had not yet made it to the dance floor when McDowell attacked them.
McDowell claims police never questioned her about the incident, only Johns, Munoz and the resort manager.
"The woman and the four girls that attacked me were left off scot-free, while I spent the night in jail," she wrote.
McDowell also apologized to the bride and groom, writing, "I am very apologetic towards the bride and groom, since this happened at their wedding."
