A Texas man has been charged for felony assault with a deadly weapon after he carved a pentagram into his six-year-old son’s back on 12/12/12.
Brent Troy Bartel believed the day to be a “holy day,” and so took a box cutter and sliced the symbol into his son.
After he was finished, he called 911 and told a police dispatcher that he “shed some innocent blood. I inscribed a pentagram on my son.”
The police dispatcher, asked, “Ok, why did you do that?”
He said, “Cause it’s a holy day.”
Around the same time, the boy’s mother called police from a neighbor’s house to alert them that Bartel was hurting him.
When authorities arrived, they found the boy standing in the house without a shirt, with a large red pentagram carved into his back. His blood was also smeared all over the front door of the house.
The symbol is a five-pointed star and has associations with many different religions.
They put a jacket around the boy, who was cold, and called paramedics. He was taken to a children’s hospital for treatment.
Bartel was arrested. Sgt. Nathan Stringer said he had a flat and emotionless manner when they arrived.
“This is a very bizarre case,” Stringer said.
They are unsure of what motivated Bartel, as he did not indicate any religious affiliation or belief system. He is currently held in a local jail on $500,000 bond and could face 20 years in prison if convicted.
Fortunately, the boy’s wounds were not very deep and he was released from the hospital.
The pentagram is commonly used as a Wiccan symbol and is traced back to 3500 B.C.
It has also been linked to many other religions, including Christianity, Judaism, and Paganism. It has also been used by magicians and Satanists.
