Guards at a Massachusetts correctional facility were confused when they saw the door of a jail cell jammed with items, and were shocked when they finally cleared the door and opened it to find former NFL star Aaron Hernandez dead.
In a statement released by the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, officials confirmed Hernandez's death and detailed how he was discovered. Hernandez reportedly tried to jam the door of his single cell with various items in an attempt to keep guards out.
On April 19, 2017 Aaron Hernandez was discovered hanging in his cell by corrections officers at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley Massachusetts at approximately 3:05 a.m., lifesaving techniques were attempted on Mr. Hernandez and he was transported to UMASS Leominster where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m. by a physician at the hospital.
Mr. Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population housing. Mr. Hernandez hanged himself utilizing a bed sheet that he attached to his cell window. Mr. Hernandez also attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items. The Massachusetts State Police are on scene and the investigation continues. Mr. Hernandez’s next of kin have been notified.
Hernandez was serving a life sentence without parole for the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd, USA Today reported.
Hernandez was best known as a former tight end for the New England Patriots. He played for the team from 2010 to 2012. On April 15, Hernandez was acquitted of a double murder that took place in 2012.
"We based our decision on the evidence presented and the law," Jury forewoman Lindsey Stringer said in a statement following his acquittal, ESPN reported.
