Brazilian woman Sandra Nabuco had almost 200 quills removed from her head on Monday after a porcupine fell from a lamppost and landed on top of her.
Nabuco was walking her dog when the 10-pound animal fell on her head.
“It was quite a shock,” Nabuco said, recalling the unbearable pain. “I felt something land on my head and then felt the spines with my hands.”
Nabuco was taken to the hospital by neighbors following the incident.
When Nabuco arrived at the hospital, a surgeon began removing the quills with tweezers. Each quill was removed individually without anesthesia.
“We stopped counting when we got to 150,” Nabaco recalled, “but there must have been around 200."
Nabuco is currently taking antibiotics to prevent an infection.
While the accident was unfortunate, Nabuco noted that she was glad she cushioned the animal’s fall and that because of her it was able to live.
