According to DallasNews.com, John Stemberger is an Orlando, Florida, attorney and Eagle Scout, who created OnMyHonor.net to support the current Boy Scouts of America (BSA) membership policy.
In their recent e-newsletter, OnMyHonor.net stated at the bottom that the BSA claimed the anti-gay organization, an "outside" party, was using their "Timeless Values" logo without permission, reports GoodAsYou.org.
In an effort to justify the possibly copyright infringement, OnMyHonor.net told the Boy Scouts that they were not an "outside" party, but "actual members of the BSA simply using a BSA logo to support the policies of the BSA!"
However, OnMyHonor.net is legally an "outside" party because they are not actually part of the Boy Scouts of America organization.
Also, OnMyHonor.net was using the BSA logo to sell their own products, including their "OnMyHonor.net Limited Edition Commemorative Patch" for $10.
After defending their shaky legal position, OnMyHonor.net stated that they "agreed to change the logo out of respect for the organization."
OnMyHonor.net wrote on their e-newsletter:
NOTE: We have a new logo because our efforts are making a real difference! We received a call from the BSA's General Counsel telling us that we were a third party violating their copyright by utilizing the BSA "Timeless Values" logo. We responded that we are not a third "outside" party, we are actual members of the BSA simply using a BSA logo to support the policies of the BSA! Although we believed we were not violating any copyright laws, we agreed to change the logo out of respect for the organization. To celebrate the change we are making this special gift patch available. Wear it proudly!
