An unidentified 6-year-old boy with autism drove a battery-operated child-size ATV car on the Bronx River Parkway in Mt. Vernon, N.Y., on Sunday.
The boy reportedly was driving the electric toy in a nearby park, but somehow ended up on the parkway.
According to CBS New York, police told 1010 WINS that a teen, who was supposed to be watching the boy, got distracted, although another report said the boy's grandmother was supposed to be watching him.
After the boy's family searched the park and neighborhood, they walked to a nearby police station and notified the authorities.
At around the same time, the Westchester County police got several 911 calls about a child driving a toy car on the parkway.
Fortunately, some quick-thinking drivers carefully boxed the boy in with their cars until the police arrived.
“He definitely had some guardian angels out there,” Mt. Vernon police spokesman Kieran O’Leary told the New York Post. “It could have been a tragedy, but it had a happy ending.”
