An unidentified 5-year-old boy was mauled to death by a Bullmastiff dog on Sunday in Jessieville, Arkansas.
The boy had survived the killer tornadoes last month in Moore, Oklahoma and had been set to Jessieville to live with a family friend while his parents rebuilt their home.
“The child was putting on some shoes and was crying and upset,” Garland County Deputy Scott Hinojosa told ArkansasMatters.com. “The dog possibly took that as being aggressive and at that time the child was attacked.”
The dog’s owner, Lynn Geiling, tried to pull the dog off the boy, who later flown to Mercy Hospital in Hot Springs, Arkansas, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The dog reportedly fled the area after attacking the child.
According to NBC News, local animal control authorities later received a call from a neighbor who shot and killed the animal. There is no word on whether or not the dog threatened the neighbor.
The website Bullmastiff.us states: "Never leave a child unattended with your Bullmastiff. They are pack animals and will find their natural place in the pack if left to natural processes. That place may be at the top of the pecking order instead of below younger family members if left unchecked."
