A 3-year-old boy accidentally shot himself on Monday in Simpsonville, South Carolina.
According to the local coroner, the boy's name was Michael Boyles.
Simpsonville Police Chief Keith Grounsell told WHNS that Boyles' mother removed the magazine from the handgun, but there was a bullet in the weapon's chamber (video below).
Boyles was able to reach the 9 mm pistol in a dresser drawer by standing on some Christmas presents in his mom's bedroom.
"If you are going to have a gun in the house, get some training with the guns. There are plenty of gun shops around here, plenty of people who have knowledge," said Chief Grounsell.
According to Deputy Chief Steve Moore, Boyles' mother and his 2-year-old brother were at home when he shot himself.
The gun belonged to the child's father Richard Boyles Jr., who died from cancer earlier this year, noted GreenvilleOnline.com.
