Authorities in Allentown, Pennsylvania, reportedly located the body of an autistic boy who went missing from a New Year’s Eve party.
The body of 5-year-old Jayliel Vega Batista was found in a canal on Jan. 2 just after a search and rescue volunteer discovered the child’s tablet in the water, CBS Philadelphia reported.
“We picked it up, brought it up to the truck, and called 9-1-1,” volunteer George Keller told the news station.
Police Chief Keith Morris said that divers were sent into the area after the tablet was found. It was then that a member of the Fire Department recovered Jayliel’s body.
“This is being considered a tragic accident, however there will be a full investigation by the Allentown Criminal Investigation Division, in conjunction with the Lehigh County coroner’s office,” Morris said, adding that no foul play is suspected at this time.
Jayliel went missing on New Year’s Eve, when he reportedly left the party barefoot and without a jacket on. He was reported missing around 10:30 p.m. and a massive search began soon after.
The cause of death is yet to be determined.
