Body Of 92-Year-Old Found Decomposing In Home He Shared With Family

A 92-year-old man had been dead for two weeks before his family found his decomposing body.

Robert L. Sufana of Portage, Illinois, was dead in his bedroom chair when his grandson found him, reports the Chicago Tribune. He is believed to have died of natural causes two weeks ago.

"It's totally bizarre to me," Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris said.

Sufana lived with his grandson, the grandson’s wife, and their 7-year-old son.

The grandson’s wife reportedly noticed a foul smell and asked her husband to check on his grandfather. He found Sufana dead in his room.

The grandson had not looked in on his grandfather since Monday evening and at that time he received no response from Sufana. The last time the grandson remembers speaking to his grandfather was eight days before then, when he went to tell him dinner was ready and Sufana did not move.

According to the grandson, he checked on his grandfather every other day.

In interviews with police, it was found there was very little interaction between Sufana and his family even though they shared a home.

Harris said Sufana’s decomposing corpse could be smelled 50 feet from the home, with all the doors and windows shut.

The grandson’s 7-year-old son was removed from the home and placed into the custody of Child Protective Services, reports PIX 11.

Portage Police Chief Troy Williams does not think charges related to Sufana’s death will be made against the family.
