The body of 4-month-old Natallya Rich was found in the basement of her family’s White Cloud, Michigan, home on May 13. It’s unclear how she died or if foul play was involved, reports MLive.
Natallya’s father, Matthew Bradley, 27, is being held on an outstanding warrant. He and the baby’s mother, Brittany Rich, 25, were located in Big Rapids, but Rich is cooperating and hasn’t been charged with anything, according to Newaygo County Prosecutor Robert Springstead. MLive reports she is currently on suicide watch.
Investigators have since executed a search warrant on the home, which the family shared with grandmother Heidi Thill. Thill contacted police when Natallya wasn’t returned home on May 12 — Bradley said he left Natallya with his sister on May 9, but she claims she did not care for the child over the weekend.
Initially, authorities didn’t believe the child was in danger. According to Newaygo County Emergency Services Director Abby Watkins, Thill’s complaint was reported as a welfare check.
"The entire time, the information that the police chief had was that the baby was in no danger and that she was with her father or her father knew her whereabouts," she said.
Family members who had been in the basement did not notice anything amiss.
