Ryan Turk has been charged with larceny for allegedly stealing a 65-cent milk carton from the cafeteria at Graham Park Middle School in Triangle, Virginia, May 10 (video below).
"This is ridiculous," the teen's mother, Shamise Turk, recently told WJLA. "This is beyond embarrassing, he’s at home for 65 cents."
The black teen is legally entitled to a free milk under the free lunch program, but said he forgot to pick up his milk while going through the lunch line, so he went back to get it.
However, a Prince William County police officer at the school accused the teen of stealing the milk and handcuffed him after the teen pulled away.
"I yanked away from him, I told him to get off of me because he’s not my dad," Ryan told the news station.
The cop took the teen to the principal’s office where he was searched for drugs since he was allegedly acting inappropriately.
"Because he was fidgety, he kept pulling on his strings of his pants, and laughing when we were trying to talk to him, he just refused to talk," Shamise recalled.
Ryan was criminally charged with larceny because he allegedly tried to conceal the milk, which he denies.
"I’m angry, I’m frustrated, I’m mad," Shamise added. "It went too far. They are charging him with larceny, which I don’t have no understanding to why they're trying to charge him with larceny when he was entitled to that milk."
Ryan was suspended from school for theft, disrespect and cellphone use, notes WTVR.
The school said in a statement: "The need for disciplinary action is determined by how a student behaves throughout any given incident. An appeals process is in place to ensure the fairness of any disciplinary action."
WJLA viewers had lots to say on the TV station's Facebook page:
"This is ridiculous. We're talking about a $.65 milk carton really they had to arrest this kid. So stupid."
"I think it's SAD.... We talking milk , even if he didn't have money.. we talking milk( a child is thirsty, I'd hope we as a people wouldn't mind feeding a hungry child). I'd taken the money out of my pocket and paid for it before arresting a child."
"Way to make yourselves look like a bunch of idiots Prince William County Schools and Prince William County Police Department..."
