Carl Hansen, 73, was driving his big rig eastbound on Highway 140, about 6 miles west of Klamath Falls, Oregon, around 6:40 a.m. on Tuesday, with his dog at his side.
For unknown reasons, he lost control, and the truck careened across westbound lanes, went off the road and ended up in the ice-covered Upper Klamath Lake, KATU reports.
Hansen of Medford, Oregon, was able to escape by climbing through the passenger-side window, State police report, but his dog did not follow. He then crawled across the ice to shore. Emergency medical responders were requested by State police and they rushed him to a hospital.
Firefighters from Klamath County Fire District No. 1 remained at the crash scene and spotted Hansen’s dog running on the ice near the truck. They rescued the dog before it fell into the icy water and got it safely back to shore, KATU reports.
