A viral video showing a Russian transgender woman being attacked by five men in a public park hit the web during the weekend. The graphic video appears to show the victim being beaten and kicked in the head and body while being dragged around the park by the men for several minutes. The title of the video apparently translates to a reference about the transgender woman being a "homosexual," according to the Huffington Post.
At a few points during the video, there is a bystander present who does nothing to try and stop the men.
“This video is of anti-LGBT activists in Russia, five men brutally beating a trans woman in broad daylight, in a public park," according to a post with the YouTube. "The video, posted on popular Russian social networking site VK, appeared on a page titled Straights for Equality, a group advocating for LGBT rights. The intention was to highlight the persecution of LGBT people in Russia.”
It has been reported that anti-gay and anti-trans Russian hate groups have been using social media and the Internet to lure young gay and trans individuals into real life meetings that typically end with beatings, torture and other forms of humiliation. These meetings are taped and then posted on the Internet.
It remains to be seen whether lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender athletes, attendees and coaches will be held accountable to the Russia's anti-LGBT legislation during the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
