Babysitter Charged For Allegedly Injuring and Killing 17-Month-Old

Ian Mykle Maniske-Huff, a 17-month-old from Hornell, New York, died on Nov. 29 after allegedly being injured by his 22-year-old babysitter, Dakota Miller.

CBS News reports that the toddler was left in Miller’s care last week, when he was injured and taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. The infant later died of his injuries. The Democrat and Chronicle reported that Miller was initially charged with second-degree assault, but more charges are likely to be added due to Ian’s death.

Ian’s father, Philip Maniske-Huff told TWC News in Rochester that he'd elected to end his son’s life.

"I couldn’t be selfish or greedy and ask my son to stay in a body that doesn’t work anymore, so most of the time the right choice is the hardest one," he said. He added that it would be difficult to explain his son’s death to his daughter, 3-year-old Sapphire Rose.

“The hardest thing out all of this is going to be her asking where her brother is. What’s keeping me strong is my little girl. I need to make sure she’s safe and taken care of,” he said.

Ian’s family decided to donate his organs.

“In one way my son is a little hero for doing so. By us doing this pieces of my son will at least live on," Phillip said.
