A newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a garbage can in Bhopal, India.
The baby, just 2 hours old, was found covered in ants by school security guard Ahmed Kahn, who said the baby was clearly in pain, the Daily Mirror reports.
"I heard the sound of a baby crying but at first thought it was some kids messing around,” the 32-year-old said. "But as it continued I realized it was coming from a bin across the road, and when I went over I saw this blood red body of a baby covered in ants.”
"The baby was waving its arms and legs around to get away from the pain from the bites because it was covered in ants,” he added. "They were crawling all over her and eating her alive.”
Kahn says he quickly pulled the little girl out, brushed off the ants and called an ambulance. The baby was taken to a nearby hospital and is now in critical condition.
The infant’s mother was found after police studied CCTV footage, but she is unwell and is being treated in another hospital, police said.
"We have registered a complaint," senior police official in Bhopal Srinivas Verma told BBC Hindi, "and once the mother is better, we will interrogate her."
A police spokesman said the woman was living with her sister in Bhopal, but is from the city of Chindwada.
"She became pregnant with a man who slept with her on the pretext of getting married but then disappeared,” he told the Mirror. ”Overcome with guilt and shame, she disposed of the newborn baby to avoid humiliation and social stigma. She was arrested and could be charged with endangering the life of a child."
