News reports of parents abusing their children are far too common these days, but this may be the first time a mother elephant has abused a newborn.
A female elephant attempted to stomp her calf "Zhuangzhuang" to death soon after he was born at the Shendiaoshan Wild Animal Natural Reserve Area, in Rongcheng, Shandong, China on August 30.
Veterinarians at the zoo thought it must have been an accident, so after treating the baby elephant, they put him back with his mother, but she tried to stomp her offspring again, noted the Daily Mail.
After the second incident, zookeepers took the small elephant away from the angry mom permanently.
"The calf was very upset and he was crying for five hours before he could be consoled. He couldn't bear to be parted from his mother and it was his mother who was trying to kill him. We don't know why the mother turned on her calf, but we couldn't take a chance," said a zoo spokesman (video below).
The story has somewhat of a happy ending, the baby elephant was adopted by one of the zookeepers.
