An Ohio teenager is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after being beaten by a group of teens in an attack caught on film by bystanders (video below).
A 16-year-old was filmed being attacked by a group of other teens. Cellphone video shows one girl beating the 16-year-old before two other girls join in.
“This is the first time in her life that she has ever been in a fight,” Bill Baker, a family friend of the victim, told Fox 6. “She had no idea what was going on.”
According to Baker, the victim’s name is Maddie and she suffered life-threatening injuries in the attack, including fractured ribs, a ruptured spleen and internal bleeding.
Gallon, Ohio, police chief Brian Saterfield said several people filmed the group fight on their cellphones, but nobody intervened or tried to stop the attack.
“There were plenty of people there to stop it and they chose not to,” Saterfield added.
Three teens have been charged with felonious assault in connection to the attack, 10TV reports.
While the investigation continues, Baker said Maddie’s family is just trying to help her recover from her injuries.
“The physical scars will, probably, go away long before the emotional ones do, so it’s going to be a long-term recovery,” Baker told Fox 6.
Maddie and her mother released written statements about the incident, according to 10TV. The mother's statement reads, in part:
This bullying has gotten out-of-hand and we, as a society, need to put a stop to it. We need to teach our children to handle disagreements with civility. We need to teach our children to stand up for those who are defenseless. Our society has gotten to the point where everyone wants to be the first to get it onto social media instead of being the first one to get help. My daughter could easily have died from these injuries had we not gotten her to the hospital when we did. This has to stop.
