An Australian man was sentenced to just eight years in prison recently despite being convicted of over 13 accounts of rape, three counts of making threats to kill, and two counts of false imprisonment.

The man, 27-year-old Noureldin Derwish, raped his two victims many times and threatened to kill their family members if they reported him to police.

His first victim was a 17-year-old girl. Derwish approached the girl and asked her if she would have sex with him in exchange for drugs. She refused, but Derwish managed to contact her on her phone several days later. The girl again refused his advances, but Derwish threatened to send his Egyptian mafia connections to harm the girl and her family if she didn’t comply. Believing the lives of her family were at stake, the girl felt she had no choice but to meet Derwish.

After the two met, Derwish took his victim to a hotel and handcuffed her to the bed. He raped her relentlessly for seven hours and told her that if she did not comply with his wishes he’d have armed security personnel come in and shoot her.

Derwish met his second victim, a 23-year-old woman, in June of 2011.

After meeting the woman, he offered her a job at a fictitious strip club. She rejected the offer. Derwish then offered her a position at yet another fictitious company he claimed was his. This time, the woman accepted the offer.

When negotiating the details of the job offer, Derwish reportedly offered the woman $3 million to have sex with him. She declined. Derwish responded by saying his sex offer was only meant as a test to see if she had the right character for the job.

The woman became impatient as days passed and she wasn’t given a starting date for her job. Then, Derwish decided to make the woman his next victim. He told her he was a prominent cocaine importer, and that he would kill the woman’s entire family while she watched if she didn’t have sex with him.

With the threat of her family’s death looming overhead, the woman was raped by Derwish a number of times.

At his hearing, Judge Gabriele Canon sentenced Derwish to eight years in prison. Critics say the sentencing is too light for a man who constructed false identities and threatened to kill the family members of his rape victims as Derwish did. Once he is released from prison, Derwish will be placed in protective custody and put on the sex offender’s registry.

Judge Canon reports that Derwish suffers from anxiety and was bullied in prison while being held for his hearing. Something tells me no one feels bad for him.
